Piano and violin were his first instruments, but he gravitated to his father's drumset at an early age and began studying privately in high school while maintaining the violin training that began at age 8. He studied jazz drumset and percussion at Arizona State University under the tutelage of pianist Chuck Marohnic, drummer Dom Moio, percussionist J. B. Smith, saxophonist Tony Malaby, bassist Joel DiBartolo, guitarist Frank Vignola, and tubist Sam Pilafian. John has studied drumset privately with Tom Brechtlein, Jeff Hamilton, Joe LaBarbera, Jim Chapin, Steve Houghton, and Peter Erskine.

John's first teacher was his father, John O'Reilly Sr., a co-author of Alfred Music Publishing's world-renowned Yamaha Band Student and Accent on Achievement concert band methods, in addition to the Strictly Strings string method and numerous concert band and orchestra pieces that are performed worldwide. John Jr. inherited his father's passion for music education, leading to his employment at Alfred Music Publishing for nearly 10 years. From 2006-2010, John was the pop drum editor at Alfred Music Publishing, where he edited and produced various products including The Commandments of Early Rhythm and Blues (Zoro / Daniel Glass), the On the Beaten Path series of books (Rich Lackowski), Universal Rhythms (Dave DiCenso), and drumset transcriptions for the entire catalog of Led Zeppelin. In 2012, John co-authored the newest book in Alfred Music Publishing's On the Beaten Path series with Rich Lackowski, On the Beaten Path: Jazz.

John has taught drumset lessons privately since 1997. Currently, John lives in Doylestown, PA and continues to record, teach, and perform locally and abroad.
