James E. Clemens

James E. Clemens grew up in the northern Indiana town of Goshen. A primarily self-taught composer, Clemens attended Goshen College where he had a multi-faceted musical career: playing violin in the orchestra, singing with the chamber choir, playing piano with the jazz band, serving as accompanist for choirs and soloists, performing on recorder and other Renaissance instruments with the Early Music Consort, and studying er hu (a Chinese two-string violin) in China. Mr. Clemens particularly enjoys commissions that allow him to collaborate with the artists who will perform his work, a process he describes as "exciting and gratifying."
