Alfred Author-Fred Hamilton

Fred Hamilton is a professor of jazz studies and director of jazz studies and director of jazz guitar at the University of North Texas. He has also taught and performed at the Jamey Abersold Summer Jazz Workshop as well as those held at the University of North Texas, Emporia State University, the University of Washington, the Nairopa Institute and Bands of American at Illinois State University.

He has published magazine articles in Guitar Player, compositions for big band, small group and guitar ensemble with the University of Northern Colorado Jazz Press, the book Melodic Studies & Compositions for Guitar, and is featured in the Master Anthology of Jazz Guitar Solos Vol. 3 with Mel Bay Publications, and co-authored Rhythm Section Workshop for Jazz Directors, published by Alfred Music Publishing Com.

He has played double bass and guitar with the Earl Harvin Trio since 1993, and he plays guitar, banjoy and slide guitars with the ensemble Brahma. He has performed concerts and gigs with jazz artists throughout the US and Canada including (but not limited to) Don Alias, Bob Mover, Art Lande, Paul McCandless, James Moody, Bill Frisell, Frank Montooth, Hal Galper, Joe Lovano, Kenny Wheeler and David Liebman.

He has also held full time teaching positions at Concordia College in Montréal, St. Francis Xavier University in Nova Scotia, Bowling Green State University in Ohio and was a graduate teaching assistance at the University of Northern Colorado where he earned his Bachelor and Master of Music degrees in composition.

He was a member of the NORAD Community band while in the U.S. Air Force, studied guitar with Jim Atkins in Denver, Colorado and has been playing professionally since High School.
